Welcome to our Newsletter

25 years ago at the world famous Pinewood Studios, Conference Craft was formed out of a buyout from Zoom Television, which was owned by the Rank Organisation.

 

The company was founded as Video Equipment Hire Ltd which was exactly what it did!

 

Role play equipment for presentation skills training and display equipment for corporate video were the mainstay of the business. U-matic tape(3/4”) was the industrial format. VHS was in its infancy. Data projection didn’t exist. The first requests for displaying  data on external monitors were just arriving.

 

Video Equipment Hire did a huge amount of work for British Airways during the 1980’s providing role play equipment for training and the provision of a large quantity of display equipment to remote parts of Heathrow. British Airways were one of the pioneers of corporate video for employee communications during its flotation and even allowed us the honour of having one of our sign written vans pictured next to Concorde for our first corporate brochure.

 

But the market moved quickly as technology improved dramatically and the introduction of video plus data projection meant that our business needed to expand its services. Consequently we made the dramatic decision (slightly frightening at the time) to change our name to ‘Conference Craft Ltdwhich we felt reflected our services in a broader sense.

 

And that is where we are to this day. Two branches - one at Heathrow and one in the Midlands. Events now make up 50% of our turnover which is now approaching £1.5 m with the traditional business of rental to hotels, exhibitions and corporate end users making up the other 50%.

The Lord Stafford Awards

Project:        The Lord Stafford Awards.

Over the past two years Conference Craft have been providing support to the annual Lord Stafford Awards.

This year’s event combined a one day exhibition and four syndicate rooms with an extravagant awards ceremony later that evening. The exhibition consisted of over 100 stands from local business, regional universities & colleges. Conference Craft were able to supply most of the exhibitors with plasma screens, DVD players & laptops. Projectors, screens and P/A systems were also installed in the additional syndicate rooms and managed by a team of technicians throughout the day.

The bulk of the project centred on the evening presentation and the 600 attendees. The awards were scheduled to take place between each dinner course with Kay Alexander introducing each category. The evening would then culminate with the winners being presented with their award live on stage by Lord Stafford. The evening would then be rounded off with an after dinner speech by Richard Noble and footage from the JCB Diesel Max world record team.

In order to create a set worthy of the awards, Conference Craft created a        50 metre x 20 metre star cloth backdrop. The stage was then erected in front of this with various height slender panels placed behind and lit with LED battens & cans. The screens were flown from three individual truss sections, the centre 16 x 9 showing live video whilst the two outer 14 x 8’s relayed show graphics. Content was projected using a Barco FLM-HD18 for the centre screen and two Barco CLM-R10’s for the outer screens. In total over 90 metres of truss in 8 individual sections was used to fly the required P/A and intelligent lighting for the event. Needless to say the show ran seamlessly and was greatly enjoyed by all in attendance, as this comment from Keele University concludes……….

2008 Exhibitions

Over the past 15 years our exhibition department has been supplying services to the MipTv, Mipcom and the Film Festival within the Palais de Festival and hotels and venues around the town of Cannes in the South of France

This year is no different with our team busy preparing for the 2008 shows. Price lists have to be produced and emailed out to clients, bookings taken and processed, equipment allocated and checked prior to leaving the UK and then loaded onto a truck three days before the rig to meet the install crew in France where the real work begins.

A four man team led by our Exhibition project manager Andrew Rollisson head off to Cannes in April, May and October to look after a range of clients from around the globe (over 50% are from USA). After the build is complete Andrew and one of his team remain out in Cannes for the duration of the events to provide onsite support as well as providing additional equipment for the many parties and evening events that take place around the town.

Over the years technology has changed from tape based players and TV style monitors to the modern day flat screen technology and disc based format players. We continue to invest in large stocks of High Definition Plasma and LCD screens of various sizes along with extensive stocks of DVD and other format players. Over the past couple of years has seen a steady migration over to HD with TV and film producers requiring the latest formats to showcase their productions.

Not only do we get to see the stars at the World famous Cannes film festival but we supply equipment to some of the big names in the film production industry with Audio Visual equipment being installed at some of the most luxurious apartments around Cannes.

Over the past year our exhibitions team have provided services to clients at Exhibition venues throughout the UK and mainland Europe, such as Olympia, Earls Court, The NEC, Messe Frankfurt and Palais de Festival. We have been involved with many shows such as the Southampton Boat Show, Lord Stafford Festival of Innovations, Frankfurt Book Fair, Crufts Online, MipTV, Mipcom, and Mippim to name but a few.

Rental to the Rescue

Having offices situated in key geographical areas around the country, Conference Craft is always on hand to deal with any last minute requests that may arise. This was highlighted only recently when a BA Boeing 777 had to make an emergency landing at Heathrow in January this year.

Having been a long time supplier of technical equipment to both BAA and BA, plans were already in place to deal with such an incident. Prior to the air accident Conference Craft had supplied large quantities of plasma screens and P/A systems installed in temporary marquees outside of the terminal buildings when bad weather caused flights to be suspended.

As news started to filter through to the various broadcasting corporations, Conference Craft were already onsite helping to put into place the various items of equipment requested to alleviate the situation. As people wanting to fly arrived they were eager to know the situation at the airport and as to whether the scheduled flights were still going to happen. Once the plasma screens were installed they were linked directly to the terminal buildings own flight information network to keep travellers up to date. Where this was not possible a feed from BBC 24 news was broadcast to keep the now stranded passengers informed of what was happening.

All of this was achieved within an hour of the incident taking place. Many of the terminal staff were quick to show their appreciation for the swift technical help of the onsite technicians. Thankfully there were no serious injuries and the airport soon returned to normal over the following weeks. Having dealt with a serious situation effectively and precisely, BAA and BA now have even stronger links with Conference Craft and were highly thankful for our expertise within this industry.
